Back in November Roberts made the New Republic's list of may not be so bad nominees. Of course so did Luttig (by assuming he'd follow precedent like he was still an appeals judge). Personally, I'm suspicious of people without a real judicial track record showing how they deal with conflicts between personal policy views and construction.
I think you're definitely taking a gamble when you nominate someone without an easily discernable track record. Roberts could go in any direction really.

I can't help but think that maybe Coulter is taking this angle in an attempt to convince the Democrats that Roberts isn't so bad.

I was thinking that too. It would be pretty crafty of her. If Limbaugh and Hannity make similar comments I'll start assuming it's a conspiracy.
