The New Batman

I haven't willingly seen a Batman movie in a long time. The last one was one of the worst movies ever made. For some reason the new Batman Begins seems promising (it's probably related to the inclusion of the best Batman villain ever, Ra's Al Ghul).

Chris, at the L&N Line liked it quite a bit.

  • I am very excited about this flick

I am pleased to see such positive buzz (the bad reviews seem to mostly be nitpicking hateration), hopefully it will outgross the 1990 debacle and allow us to experience a whole sequence of non-lame Batman films.

    To hell with Joel Schumacher...

  • What 1990 debacle are you referring to? Do you mean the original one? I'm just confused because there was no 1990 Batman movie, no (wasn't the original in 89)?

That was a debacle? I still vividly remember waiting on line outside the theatre waiting to get tickets. I haven't seen it in maybe 5 years or so, but I LOVED the original. How could you not?

Love that Joker. And the Batdance/Prince song kicked ass.

  • Ok I'm a year off, you know what I'm talking about. I bought the DVD of the 89 (excuse me) version not long ago and it looks horrible. I waited for hours in line as well and was totally giddy about it when I was 12, but seeing it now - with an obviously more critical eye toward film - it really has no legs. I have watched plenty of 80s films recently and this one is by far the most dated.

The sets look really bad, the effects were lame, the writing sucked for the most part, and even Prince's soundtrack is tinny and weak. Nicholson's performance holds up pretty well, but that's really about it. I probably wouldn't be so pissed if it weren't for the fact that it was supposed to be based on the seminal Batman work - The Dark Knight Returns - but instead seems to be based on some Batman in Cheeseland alternate universe.

I say this as a Batman fan and a Tim Burton fan.

  • Fair enough. I haven't seen it in years. But I definitely enjoyed it thoroughly the last time I did see it...so I guess we'll just disagree on the hotness of Vicki Vale and coolness of Jacky Boy.

And I was NOT trying to give you shit about the 1990 shit, I was genuinely confused. I'm easily confused.

  • No we're not going to disagree on Kim Basinger, though she wasn't quite as hot as I remembered her, she is undoubtedly a gorgeous woman and this is clear in the film.

And I wasn't tripping at all on the 90 thing, but looking at the words that I typed I can see how it may have seemed as if I was.

  • Plus "Party Man" is far superior to "Bat Dance" both as a song and in context with the movie (it is played as the Joker destroys the art museum).

  • Kim Basinger had man-hands. Seriously.

  • We called a girl at school Manhands. Goddamn, that nickname makes me laugh to no end.

Thank you, Jerome S. and Larry D.

  • I saw it yesterday, it was good--well worth seeing on the big screen. I like it when Christian Bale isn't an obnoxious racist.

  • Yeah that was a pretty lame role choice.

    Pretty lame plot device too.
