A while back (in 2004), a colleague and I designed a survey in which we asked Americans whether they generally trusted other countries and why they did or did not do so. In the responses to our open-ended question, France was mentioned more often than any nation other than Iraq. Moreover, the comments about France were overwhelming negative. One respondent simply said, "France--the snakes!"
Thought you might get a kick out of that one.
